Reviews for 30th Anniversary Edition: "Dawkins first book, The Selfish Gene, was a smash hit.Best of all, Dawkins laid out this biology-some of it truly subtle-in stunningly lucid prose. Forty years later, its insightsremain as relevant today as on the day it was published. This 40th anniversary edition includes a new epilogue from the author discussing the continuing relevance of these ideas in evolutionary biology today, as well as the original prefaces and foreword, and extracts from early reviews.Oxford Landmark Science books are "must-read" classics of modern science writing which have crystallized big ideas, and shaped the way we think. This imaginative, powerful, and stylistically brilliant work not only brought the insights of Neo-Darwinism to a wide audience, but galvanized the biology community, generating much debate and stimulating whole new areas of research. Professor Dawkins articulates a gene's eye view of evolution - a view giving centre stage to these persistent units of information, and in which organisms can be seen asvehicles for their replication. The million copy international bestseller, critically acclaimed and translated into over 25 languages. As influential today as when it was first published, The Selfish Gene has become a classic exposition of evolutionary thought. At times, the prose does not match the quality of the story. Obert Skye's imagined world of Foo contains many whimsical and delightful elements, such as Humble Pie that apologizes for its own flavor and promises to taste better next time, and candy that temporarily rearranges its chewer's body parts. As Lev hurries to find the gateway between the two worlds before Sabine does, he encounters several friends to help him: Winter, a bright 13-year-old girl who can instantly freeze things and people just by wishing it Clover, an adorable, foot-high furry creature from Foo who has been assigned as Lev's companion (and, apparently, as comic relief) and Geth, the wise but displaced king of Foo, who alone knows the full secret of the gateway. Sabine, the wicked ruler of Foo, wants to extend his tyranny by ruling this world as well-but if that happens, no one on Earth would ever be able to dream again. He is also the only person on the planet who can protect the gateway to Foo, a mythical realm whose existence ensures that human beings in this reality retain the ability to dream, hope and imagine. Oklahoma orphan teen Leven Thumps has a hidden and powerful talent: he can glimpse, and then manipulate, the future. This imaginative and entertaining young adult fantasy novel successfully depicts an unusual boy's coming of age. His mother can be heard screaming, “Oh Jesus!” in the background. He continues tasing Blair, all the while the first officer yells, “Drop the knife!” Blair manages to rise up once again, prompting the first officer to shoot him nine times. “I do not wanna shoot you!” Seconds later, the second officer tasers Blair, causing him to fall to the ground. “Don’t do it!” the officers repeatedly shout at him. Though the view of Michael is somewhat obscured, he can be seen holding what appears to be a knife to his throat. “Don’t make it the hard way.” Soon after, the officers manage to pry open the door, seeing Blair with the knife.īlair then closes the door again, before the officer makes good on his words to kick it down. “Michael, you wanna do this the easy way,” the officer adds. “We will kick in the door, and I don’t wanna do it.”Īs they try reasoning with Blair, the officers also attempt to jimmy open the door’s lock. “Hey, if you don’t open the door, we’re gonna kick it in,” one officer warns outside the bathroom door. In the video, the officers are first seen attempting to coax Blair out of the bathroom, where he had locked himself, prompting the 911 call. Blair suffered from schizophrenia and was suicidal, his mother claims. I really like John as a narrator of Tal's books but he can be a little over-dramatic at times and occasionally the voices blurred into one, so I was unsure who was speaking. Enjoy these quiet moments with Sean's musings because, once a gunshot is heard, it is fast paced and completely engaging as you try to work out what really happened and what had Sean so distressed with his memories of 1 year ago." The above was my review after reading the eBook and I couldn't wait for the audio-book, however, I think I prefer the former. He's thinking back to the last G8 summit, 1 year ago when things went horribly wrong for him, what? we are not told at this time. It starts with Sean, a Secret Service agent patrolling the grounds of Camp David during a G8 summit. He just has a way of pulling you into a book with the opening pages and this was no exception. "I've yet to read a book by this author that I wouldn't give 5* plus. However, arriving on site in the Delta Pavonis system, Caine discovers that the job he’s been given is anything but secret or safe. Riordan’s mission: travel to a newly settled world and investigate whether a primitive local species was once sentient-enough so to have built a lost civilization. Twelve years later, Riordan awakens to a changed world. FIRE WITH FIRE sets a great many things in motion, signaling the start of what I assume will be a sweeping SF epic.Ģ105, September: Intelligence Analyst Caine Riordan uncovers a conspiracy on Earth’s Moon-a history-changing clandestine project-and ends up involuntarily cryocelled for his troubles. It is a novel that has reminded me just what it is that I love about the genre and it has ensured that I will be following Gannon’s work closely in the years to come. Gannon’s FIRE WITH FIRE ( Amazon) absolutely falls under the definition of good Science Fiction. Once my go-to genre, Science Fiction has taken a back seat to Fantasy of late. It’s been far too long since I’ve read a good Science Fiction novel.
